The provincial government said Thursday that it hopes to recruit more medical professionals to service the remaining hospitals out of 16 target that must be completed before Governor Jose Alvarez’s term ends in June 2022.
Vice Governor Victorino Dennis Socrates said the newly-built P111 million Northern Palawan Provincial Hospital (NPPH), which was inaugurated on September 9 in Taytay town, employs more than 100 medical personnel, and nine of them are doctors.
“I hope, more Palaweños will be interested in becoming medical professionals. I think hirap tayo sa ilang taon, kulang pa rin ang ating mga doctor at nurse, medical technologist. Patuloy na naghahanap ang provincial government ng mga papayag na maging scholar, at mag-aral ng mahirap na kurso ng medisina,” Vice Governor Socrates said.
Among the new NPPH facilities are doctor’s quarters, dietary, MRF, isolation, powerhouse, and morgue. It was built in partnership between the Department of Health (DOH) and the provincial government, with the former providing P7.2 million and the latter covering the remaining costs.
Engr. Saylito Purisima, head of the infrastructure unit of IHELP (Infrastructure, Health, Education, Livelihood, and Protection of the Environment) and Provincial Engineering Office (PEO) OIC, said the Level 1 new NPPH has a 50-bed capacity and is the largest hospital in northern Palawan.
He also said that it is the 11th hospital to be opened under the administration of Governor Jose Alvarez, as well as the fastest hospital to be completed, since it was built from November 2020 and September 2021.
“Ang pinaka-problema natin ngayon ay human resources, nurses, medical health workers. Ang administrative works, madali lang ‘yan. Pero ‘yong nurses, medtech, pharmacists, ito ‘yong kulang natin ngayon. Lalo na sa nurses, iyon ang basic requirement ng DOH na iko-comply talaga ‘yong minimum requirement based sa capacity of the hospital operation,” Engr. Purisima explained.
“We will continue hiring because napakalaking operation itong Northern Palawan Provincial Hospital. We agree na ito ang pinakamabilis natapos because pinatutukan talaga ito ni Governor Alvarez sa Provincial Engineering Office because we are running out of time. Patapos na ‘yong term niya by June 2022,” he added.
Meanwhile, the existing NPPH will be transformed into a temporary treatment and monitoring center for COVID-19 patients who need less medical care before being sent home.
Engr. Purisima also said he is confident that PGP will inaugurate all 16 target hospitals under Governor Alvarez’s administration before the end of his term in 2022.
The hospital in Cuyo town which is now partially occupied will be inaugurated in October. Purisima said the PEO will mobilize its technical personnel to give focus on the completion of the Cuyo District Hospital.
“The total target under Alvarez administration is 16 hospitals but it does not mean na yong 5, actually nasisimulan na ‘yon. Well in fact ‘yong Cuyo, we will have an inauguration by October at saka sa (Sofronio) Española newly created hospital. The four hospitals will be done and completed by February next year,” he said.
