A 30-year-old man from Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, drowned Saturday afternoon in Nagtabon Beach on the west coast of Puerto Princesa City.

Police investigation identified the victim as Edgardo Ramirez, a resident of Sitio Kanluran, Barangay Malamig, Calapan City.

He temporarily lived in Brgy. Mandaragat, said Puerto Princesa City Police Office (PPCPO) Station 2 commander P/Maj. Edgar Salazar.

Salazar said that based on their initial investigation, Ramirez was drinking with his companions in Nagtabon Beach and later went to the water alone to ride a kayak.

However, Salazar said he fell three times on the water.

“Itong victim pumunta sa beach mag-isa, sakay-sakay ng kayak. Ilang beses siyang sumakay pero ilang beses din siyang nahulog. ‘Yong last attempt niya, napansin ng mga tao doon sa area na nakasaksi na hindi na lumitaw ‘yong victim,” he said.

Salazar said his companions tried to save the victim by giving him cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but they were unable to revive him.

He said Ramirez was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Salazar said the drowning incident happened at 4 p.m., however, it was only reported to them at 7:30 p.m. on August 10.

Ramirez’ family had already been informed about the accident. They reportedly requested for an autopsy to be conducted on his remains.
