CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — The local government of Bulalacao recently started its “Plastik Palit Bigas Program”, which aims to promote obligatory self-monitoring and compliance with environmental requirements, as well as voluntary self-regulation.

This is part of the local government unit’s (LGU) Clean and Green Program being managed by the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Unit (MENRU) and Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO).

According to the report of MENRU, they had already dispersed 20 kilograms of rice in exchange for plastics from the residents on the first day of the project’s launching.

Under the project, a kilo of plastic materials collected will be exchanged for one kilogram of rice. However, residents who wanted to have their plastics exchanged with other items may opt to choose sardines and noodles aside from rice.

MENRU is accepting plastic materials even during holidays from 10:00 AM onwards, Monday-Thursday at MINSU Bulalacao Extension Compound, near the Health Center.

The local government continuously implements the reduction and elimination of adverse impacts of waste materials on human health and the environment of people in the community.  (LTC/PIA-OrMin)
