The Brooke’s Point municipal government on Friday unveiled its new two-storey District Evacuation Center in Barangay Tubtub, strengthening southern Palawan’s disaster risk and resiliency preparedness program.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Health (DOH), Department of National Defense (DND), and Office of Civil Defense (OCD) funded the P35 million evacuation center which took less than two years to build.
Cecilia Castellar, Brooke’s Point municipal admin officer V, said that the “durable” evacuation center is expected to mitigate the possible impact of disaster citing its compliance to the requirements set forth by the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (NDRRMO).
“Only two municipalities in Palawan were able to avail this project from DPWH. Brooke’s Point and Coron immediately complied with all the requirements kaya na-grant yung proposal in 2017,” Castellar said.
OCD regional director Maj. Gen. Ruben Carandang along with the representatives from several government agencies led the blessing and ceremonial inauguration.
The two-storey evacuation center includes an accommodation hall; laundry and drying area; elevated water tank; garbage disposal facility; several toilet and bath cubicles; and a power facility that is claimed to withstand typhoons, hurricanes, floods, landslides, and other fortuitous events.
The evacuation center will also serve as a venue for disaster training, calamity drills, information, education, and communications campaigns and other disaster preparedness activities during normal times.
