As the city hosts the Batang Pinoy 2019 National Championship, mayor Lucilo Bayron vowed this week to strengthen sports tourism in Puerto Princesa.
During a press conference on Sunday, Bayron said his administration will be promoting and projecting the city to be a sports tourism destination.
“When we started improving the sports facilities in the city, we never thought that we will be able to host such events like Batang Pinoy. During my first term, we hosted the International Dragon Boat Competition and naging successful yun pero hindi lang naulit kasi may mga problema kaming gusto naming ayusin,” Bayron said.
Bayron also said that the solutions are now “being started” to prepare the city for the influx of visitors specific to sports events.
“Hopefully, dadami yung mga sporting events dito and we are hoping to bring more people to come to Puerto Princesa para ma-generate yung economy natin”, Bayron said.
The city government had earlier bid to host next year’s Palarong Pambansa but was unsuccessful, allocating some P140M for the construction and improvement of sports facilities.
