The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has appealed to the city government to allow the construction of roads leading to major tourist destinations in Puerto Princesa such as the underground river in Barangay Cabayugan.

DPWH 3rd Engineering District spokesperson Engr. Arthur Torillo said the national road in Puerto Princesa is only until Barangay Bahile while the remaining roads going to Sitio Sabang, Cabayugan are already under the city.

He said their district office is willing to allocate funds for the development of roads leading to major tourist destinations.

“Hanggang Bahile tayo ngayon pero ‘yong papuntang Sabang city road na kasi ‘yan pero pwede kaming magpondo n’yan,” he said.

In May 2017, 3rd Palawan District Rep. Gil Acosta tried to push for House Bill 3319 that will convert the Salvacion-Sabang Road into a wider national road for expansion and maintenance but it did not materialize, he said.

“May proposal noon na i-convert into national road pero hindi nag-materialize kasi nga hindi pumayag ang city dahil mababawasan ang kanilang road network,” Torillo said.

Road network is a system designed to carry the basic level of transport infrastructure within urban areas, it also links to other areas beyond or within the urban areas.

“Isa din dyan sa mga pwede natin gawin ay ang mga roads leading to major tourists destination. Pwede namin pondohan ‘yan basta may request ang city, tulad n’yan sa underground river maliit na ang kalsada,” he said.
