A surge of people wanting to beat the Commission on Elections (Comelec) deadline for new voter registration in Puerto Princesa City has prompted the local poll body to request for additional biometric voter’s registration machines (BVRM).
Puerto Princesa City Comelec officer Ferdinand Bermejo said they are currently processing between 200 to 300 registrations daily with only two machines, forcing them to slow down and prevent an equipment malfunction.
“Ang ideal ko dito kung pagugustuhan ay 10, lima sa north, lima sa south, ang dami ditong tao. Imagine two machines for how many registrants?” Bermejo said.
Bermejo said they want to request for 10 additional BVRMs but he also doubt if their central office would be able to send the backups before the deadline of voter’s registration this month.
He said they want to avoid problems in backing up their records in case of a machine malfunction.
“Two or three [additional] pwede na ‘yan total konting araw na lang at saka nakapagpa-registration na tayo noong 2017 from May to July siguro marami na rin ang na-rehistro since 2017. Noong 2016 meron na din,” he added.
