Twenty candidates will vie for the Miss Subaraw 2018 crown on November 8 at the Puerto Princesa City Coliseum.

The week-long biodiversity festival will mark the November 11 “Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) Day.”

In a press conference Sunday, the candidates were officially introduced to the public wearing their swimsuit attires.

Elizabeth Maclang, the park’s superintendent, earlier said that it is the first biodiversity festival managed by a local government.

The talent competition was conducted on November 6 at the SM City Puerto Princesa.

The pageant will be hosted by Sophia Seneron, Ms. Multinational 2018, with Marc Nash.

Guests during the pageant night will be Ariella Arida, Ms. Universe 2013 runner-up; Rene Salud, fashion designer; Janine Alipoon, Ms. Tourism International 2017; Timothy Yap; Mr. Chinatown 2014 runner-up, David Licauco and Catwalk 2018 winner John Paul Smith.

Subaraw came from the word suba” which means “river” and “taraw” which is the local word for “karst mountain.”

Emerlyn Traballo, one of the candidates representing the AMA Computer Learning Center College, said the importance given to biodiversity conservation makes the festival unique from the other events in the country.

Traballo said that it will help promote the conservation of the environment in Barangay Cabayugan where the underground river lies as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

“The Subaraw festival wants to promote the conservation of environment lalo na dito sa Puerto Princesa na mayroon tayong underground river. We need to have self-discipline para pangalagaan ito,” she said.
