How do you react when the odds are not in your favor? You’re already thirty and the dreams you had as a child or even as a college student are not even reaching the first step in the ladder. Time with friends is not even a lifestyle, but an occasion, because you have to spend more time working yourself off and building your own life. Finances are not free flowing; in fact, it is sometimes a struggle. It may even feel like relationships are tough to handle, and let’s face it, relationship-related stress is even more affecting us than money, work, or any physical issue. Yeah right, life is indeed difficult. M. Scott Peck in his book The Road Less Traveled even used this statement as his first line: Life Is Difficult. So, what do we do when things are just not easy and hope is not even within reach?
If this is the kind of life you are living right now, let me just encourage you with this chapter in the Bible.
“I Will Walk with Integrity” Psalm 101 A Psalm of David
1 I will sing of steadfast love and justice; to you, O LORD, I will make music. 2 I will ponder the way that is blameless. Oh when will you come to me? I will walk with integrity of heart within my house; 3 I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me. 4 A perverse heart shall be far from me; I will know nothing of evil. 5 Whoever slanders his neighbor secretly I will destroy. Whoever has a haughty look and an arrogant heart I will not endure. 6 I will look with favor on the faithful in the land, that they may dwell with me; he who walks in the way that is blameless shall minister to me. 7 No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house; no one who utters lies shall continue before my eyes. 8 Morning by morning I will destroy all the wicked in the land, cutting off all the evildoers from the city of the LORD.
Yes, life is not perfect, and sadly, more often it is not even how we want it. But in the midst of the soul-chaos and the pains we bear, Jesus is there for us. What we can do is get things right with Him. Maybe there are certain areas in our lives that are not yet fully surrendered to Him. We must evaluate our lifestyles and seek His forgiveness for our wrongs. Let us be humble to admit if ever we have dirty thoughts, sinful actions, and unclean language. Our God is a forgiving Father. We can come to Him and He will receive us with grace.
Or it may be that we are praying as often as we should. God wants to give us the best if we only ask Him, and when we ask Him with a pure heart.
Another way to look at things and situation positively is to worship God. Make music to Him. Sing your heart out to Him. Music has a special quality that cleanses our souls.
Sometimes God is also challenging us to check whose company we are with. 1 Corinthians 15:33 says, “Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” Our intentions may be good, and on our own, things may go well and cause us to succeed. However, the people we are with may inhibit the favor in our lives. About this, there are a whole lot of factors, reasons and explanations. Let us not be afraid to lose some friends, or even some time with them, for the sake of making it right with God.
As we go through all the difficult parts of life, remember Jesus. Hebrews 12:2-3 uplifts us with these words, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”
Look to Yahweh and be radiant.
