Two fire marshalls face graft raps in Puerto Princesa

The Regional Trial Court Branch 95 has scheduled the arraignment for the criminal cases filed against Former City Fire Marshall F/Sinsp Herald Castillo and SFO2 Alex Calangi to August 2, 2016. Castillo and Calangi are facing graft charges in violation of Section 25 of RA 3019 or Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.

Prosecutor Avelino Macamus Jr officially filed the case against Castillo and Calangi, the charge claiming that the two were involved in a collaboration to extort Php100,000, later reduced to PhP40,000, from a private business establishment in Puerto Princesa in exchange of a Fire Safety Inspection Certificate (FSIC).

The said case was originally scheduled for arraignment on Friday, July 15, 2016, but Castillo failed to appear before the Court because of a prior “official business” transaction outside the province, while Calangi excused himself on grounds that his legal counsel, Atty. Zoilo Cruzat, was not available. Presiding Judge Paul Jagmis postponed the arraignment and granted the complainants’ request for another date.

Castillo and Calangi have yet to comment on the issue.
