Authorities apprehended 10 Vietnamese nationals on Tuesday morning on board a foreign fishing vessel some 10 nautical miles from the Malampaya Platform off El Nido.
Initial reports indicated that the apprehending authorities have confiscated various fishing equipment, slaughtered sharks and other marine products found in the vessel.
John Vincent Fabello of the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD) said they are still conducting an inventory of the items confiscated from the vessel.
“Regardless kung nasa protected area ba sila o hindi, pumasok sila sa teritoryo natin. Initially, poaching of sharks is a clear violation of Wild Life Act,” Fabello said.
He also said that this is the first time to apprehend Vietnamese gathering sharks.
At press time, authorities were looking for an interpreter to help them communicate with the foreign nationals.
