Senior citizens who are members of Senior Citizen’s Assistance Program will receive an increase in the financial assistance they quarterly receive from the city government amounting to P 600.00.
Mercedes Avancena, head of the Office for Senior Citizen’s Affairs Office, said senior citizens can now enjoy receiving P 600.00 every three months, as against the P 500.00 they received in 2017.
“This coming 2018, it will be quarterly P600. Meaning, P200 monthly ang allowance ng Senior Citizen every month for 2018,” she said.
She said that the said increase was prompted by the deficiency of the government assistance in providing for the needs of the senior citizens, especially of those who are needy.
“For this year, nag-increase dahil kulang talaga ang assistance na binibigay sa mga senior citizens,” Avancena said.
She also said that all senior citizens in the city can be part of the program regardless of their jobs, as long as they reach 60.
“Sa ating mga senior citizens regardless of their economic status. Basta Senior Citizen ka ng City, entitled ka sa financial assistance,” she said.
In 2017, Avancena said OSCA catered to 16,000 senior citizens all over Palawan. In 2018, however, she said a projected whopping 20,000 senior citizens will come storming for assistance.
“Last quarter 16,000 for 2017. It will increase; projected mga 20, 000,” she said.
For 2018, the OSCA has a budget of P48 M, but not all of it will be spent for the city government’s assistance.
She said that chunks of it will also be spent for other purposes like the salary of their employees.
“Hindi lahat (budget) for the seniors, kasi kasama din diyan sweldo para sa mga workers,” Avancena added.
She also said that the assistance will be immediately given to the recipients along with OSCA employees distributing the money to each barangay.
“Promise ni mayor (Bayron), every three months regular. Basta dumating ang date, dire-diretso iyan. At hinahatid iyan sa barangay halls, at ang nagbibigay from this office,” Avancena said.
“It’s not really enough. Kahit nga 1,000 pa iyan; it’s not really enough. Alalay lang iyon to the needs of senior citizens kasi marami sila, at hindi naman kayang sagutin lahat,” she added.
