The Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation (RTMNC)  and Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) showcased their environmental achievements last week as they played hosts to the participants of the Tour de Palawan, Padyak para sa Kalikasan.

Officials highlighted the company’s continued focus on environmental projects as the main component of its mining operations, boasting that the practice has earned the company prestigious awards and government recognition.

“Halos 40 percent ang ginagastos ng kompanya ay napupunta sa environment,” Engr. Ventutimo “Boy” Masindo, division manager of RTNMC, told  participants and tour organizers.

He pointed to the success of the company’s rehabilitation of mined-out areas that began in 2008 and are now fully recovered.

“Bago pa man ang NGP (National Greening Program) ay matagal na nating ginagawa ang environmental management,” he said.

These initiatives, Masindo said, earned them recognition for Best Practice in Sustainable Mineral Development in Mineral Mining Category conferred during the first ASEAN Mineral Awards at the Sixth ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Minerals in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar in November 2017.

Engr. Brix Abela, environmental management officer of Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) said that their company, as well as RTNMC, are confident of the standard of their operations.

“Kahit sino pa ang mag -audit ay wala kaming kaba, because we are always protecting the environment,” he said.
