Bataraza, Palawan – Rio Tuba Nickel (RTN) and Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) on Sunday feted the candidates of this year’s Mutya ng Palawan to a 2-day tour of its facilities in Rio Tuba.
The candidates were shown the company’s mining operations and rehabilitation sites.
“We want to promote a vision that tourism and the mining industy can collaborate to produce a better outcome,” said Ernesto Llacuna, Community Relations Manager of CBNC, during a program to welcome the candidates.
The candidates visited the RTN Foundation Hospital and joined a tree planting activity in the rehabilitation areas.
RTN Head of Mining Rehabilitation Bibiano Ranes said the company’s rehabilitation sites boast of a tilapia fishpond and a bird population of at least 35 species.
“Gusto namin malaman niyo kung paano namin ginagawa ang lahat para maging stable ang rehabilitation ng area. It is mandatory to give back to mother nature,” Ranes said.
Engr. Brix Abela, Environmental Manager of CBNC, said they have planted around 120,000 trees since 2011 in the rehabilitation sites.
“It would take more years to complete the rehabilitation of the area but we are constantly pushing to give back what we took from nature,” Abela said.
