Detained murder suspects, ex-Palawan governor Joel Reyes, and his ex-Coron mayor brother, Mario Reyes, can now participate in the May 2016 elections after their voter’s registrations were updated recently by their biometrics.
Jomel Ordas, spokesperson of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), confirmed Wednesday, October 21, that the Reyes brothers are now eligible voters again after having their biometrics updated.
Ordas disclosed the Reyes brothers had their biometrics taken Tuesday morning inside the Puerto Princesa City Jail (PPCJ) by representatives from the Municipal COMELEC of Coron.
The development came following a court order the local COMELEC office received on October 19.
It can be noted that on October 16, the Palawan Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 52 granted the urgent motion to complete the registration requirements of both brothers, who are running for Coron town mayor and vice mayor, respectively.
The duo’s registrations had been deactivated after their failure to vote during the past two elections, or since going into hiding after being implicated in the 2011 Gerry Ortega murder.
