Following the passage of House Bill 4727 on third and final reading in the House of Representatives, the clergy of the Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Princesa has issued on Thursday, March 9 an official statement strongly opposing the death penalty bill.

Bilang inyong mga lingkod ng Diyos sa Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Princesa, kami ay nalulungkot at nababahala sa pagpapasa ng Death Penalty Bill sa ating Kongreso,” said the statement.

Palawan’s priests also expressed disappointment over the ‘yes’ votes of the province’s three representatives in the Lower House.

The clergy called all Palaweños to fight for the sanctity of life and to appeal to government leaders to stand firm for the general interest of the public.

House Bill 4727 seeks to repeal Republic Act 9346 which prohibits the imposition of death penalty in the Philippines. It also pushes to amend the Revised Penal Code and the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. It garnered 217 affirmations, 1 abstention and 54 objections. Palawan’s three representatives, namely Franz Josef George Alvarez, Frederick Abueg and Gil Acosta, were one of the 217 solons who affirmed the passage of the said controversial bill.
