Free wifi connection is now available at the Puerto Princesa Airport with internet servers that can accommodate around 3,000 to 4,000 users, this after Thursday’s launching of a joint initiative involving the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines-Puerto Princesa and Smart-PLDT Telecommunication.

Harold Kim Orbase of PLDT said the internet connection program was designed by Smart with 1 gigabit per second speed and is being backed-up by PLDT’s fiber optic network. The program can handle up to 1,500 users who can simultaneously live stream with smooth, uninterrupted and buffer-less connection. However, if people actually chose to merely visit websites that use lesser bandwidth than live streaming, such as Facebook or Google, the servers will be able to accommodate around 3,000 to 4,000 users. “Depende kasi sa behavior ng users ‘yun,” Orbase explained.

Engr. Percy Malonesio, CAAP manager, extended the government’s gratitude to their partner telecommunications company. “Malaking bagay ito, na beneficial for everybody within airport premises…’Pag may mga delayed flights na hindi maiiwasan, para hindi naman sila masyadong magagalit sa atin, habang naghihintay, mag-wa-wifi wifi, malilibang sila,” Malonesio explained.

The wifi program follows the ‘100 days’ promise of the DOTr which vowed to provide super-speed internet connection to the public, specifically in major airports in the Philippines.

Puerto Princesa Airport serves over a million passengers annually and is considered one of the biggest regional airports in the country. It is currently the 19th transport hub in the country that now offers smart-pldt-free wifi experience.
