The Philippine National Police has identified the municipalities of Bataraza, Quezon and Sofronio Española as its “areas of concern” for next week’s Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.
Senior Superintendent Gabriel Lopez, provincial PNP chief, said they have considered the three towns as priorities because of the recorded cases of election-related violence in these areas during the past polling exercises.
Lopez added however that based on their monitoring of the ongoing campaign period, there has been no cases of election related violence in any part of the province.
“Ang atmosphere natin peaceful. But we are prepared sa possibility na biglang may umusbong na problema,” he said.
The campaign period for the Barangay and SK elections will run until May 12, Saturday, for aspirants of barangay chairman, seven barangay kagawad (councilors), SK chairman and seven SK members.
Jomel Ordas of the provincial COMELEC expressed appreciation to the military and the provincial PNP for ensuring peace and order during the the campaign period.
Ordas also commended the unity walks and peace covenants that have been organized in various areas of the province.
