The Department of Agriculture (DA) is set to procure some 40,000 bags of certified rice seeds this year to support farmers, ensure productivity, and maintain 100% rice sufficiency in Palawan.

Leonardo Enriquez of the Agricultural Production Coordinating Office for Palawan South (APCOPS) of the DA-Palawan Research and Experimentation Station (PRES) said Thursday that the procurement will be distributed to farming families in the province.

“This will be distributed to the municipalities depending on the size of their area for rice production. Kung mas malaking rice area, mas malaking allocation,” he said.

They are utilizing the distribution, Enriquez added, as a strategy to encourage farmers to continue engaging in agriculture by employing organic practices and system of farming since they cost less.

In Palawan, the average yield of palay harvest per hectare is 3,800 kilos, which is lower than the national average of 4,500-5,000 kilos.

“Despite that, Palawan remains self-sufficient,” he stated, adding the distribution could increase productivity to be at par the national median.

“Meron tayong mga rice seed growers sa Palawan, and we encourage more to produce kasi kailangan natin ng mas marami,” said Enriquez.
