No threats facing Palawan from Chinese activities in WPS

The AFP’s Western Command (WESCOM) on Tuesday downplayed security threats to Palawan resulting from China’s increased military presence in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

The assurance was made by WESCOM commander Lt. General Rozzano Briguez during the commemoration of the Philippines’ 120th Founding Anniversary in Puerto Princesa.

Briguez said the Palaweños can expect the WESCOM to take care of their safety and security in the province in the face of what is currently going on in the WPS.

He added the soldiers assigned in the Kalayaan Group of Islands are doing their best in conducting sea patrols and security strategies to defend the Philippine-claimed islands.

The Independence Day celebration in the city began with a mass at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, singing of the national anthem and wreath-laying at the statues of Dr. Jose Rizal and Dr. Higinio Mendoza at the People’s Amphitheater in Mendoza Park.

In his speech, City Mayor Lucilo Bayron called for unity in facing present economic challenges.
