No hospital arrest for Reyes brothers

Former Coron Mayor Mario Reyes undergo a check-up upon arrival at the airport due to high fever.

Malacañang is confident that the court will not grant a hospital arrest for former Palawan Governor Joel Reyes and brother former Coron Mayor Mario Reyes.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte in a report posted on www.philstar.com, said the Department of Justice will oppose any motion by the Reyes brothers for a hospital arrest.

The two, suspects in the murder of broadcaster Gerry Ortega in 2011, are now detained at the Puerto Princesa City jail.

“Secretary (Leila) de Lima will have a strong position on that and hayaan na lang po nating mag-decide ang ating justice department, lalo na ang Palawan RTC (regional trial court) ang may jurisdiction na  sa magkapatid na Reyes,” Valte said.

She pointed out that the brothers “should be in jail as the case charged against them is murder.”

They also need to answer many questions such as how they were able to flee and hide in the resort island of Phuket, Thailand, she added.

“How can they ask for a hospital arrest as they lived a life of a tourist in Thailand,” Valte said.
