Police said they have identified a third suspect and the possible mastermind in last month’s murder of lawyer Hermie Aban.
“Na-identify na. Kulang na lang ng ebidensya kaya hindi pa natin ilalabas (ang pangalan),” PInsp Rey Aron Elona, head of Task Force Aban, said.
Police had previously named two other suspects in the case, one of which was Raymond Cariaga who was nabbed along with his companion Mark Biaco on August 18 while both were riding a motorbike in Nadayao Road, Barangay San Pedro, Puerto Princesa. Authorities were able to confiscate a hand grenade from Cariaga, and one sachet of alleged shabu from Biaco.
Elona said the information given by witnesses’ convinced by Aban’s family led to the arrest of Cariaga.
“Nung nag-execute na ‘yung witness natin, sa tulong ng family ni Atty. Aban, na-confirm natin na s’ya rin ‘yung suspect sa insidente,” said Elona.
Both were detained at Mendoza Police Station after the arrest. Cariaga meanwhile has an existing murder case filed in 2003.
Days after Cariaga was arrested, another lead was received by the authorities. Elona said that new witnesses pointed to an unidentified man who went back to the scene of the crime moments after the shooting.
Witnesses also noted that this unidentified person who asked them about the CCTV was wearing the same shirt and helmet similar to the gunman who shot the victim minutes earlier.
“Yung sketch nanggaling dun sa mga unang witness pa, kasi may issue na after ng pagbaril kay attorney, may bumalik dun na tao, tapos nagtanong kung may mga CCTV ba sa lugar,” said Elona.
Police released a cartographic sketch of the person based on the description made by witnesses and on August 30, during a press conference, PSSUPT Ronnie Francis Cariaga identified the suspect as Disodado Aungon. Aungon is still at large.
