A naval helicopter evacuated an injured crewman of a cargo vessel that figured in an accident while passing through the Sulu Sea some 35 nautical miles east of Puerto Princesa City on Sunday.

A report released by the Western Command on Monday identified the cargo vessel as MV Evangelia and its injured crewman as Santos Tambo Jr.

Tambo reportedly suffered third-degree burns after an air conditioning unit on the vessel caught fire and exploded.

The vessel’s skipper, Capt. Ernesto Abuan, reportedly radioed for help after the incident, prompting the Naval Air Unit West (NAUW) to dispatch an AW109 helicopter (NH432) to evacuate the injured crew.

The patient was brought to the Palawan Multipurpose Cooperative Hospital for treatment.
