The municipality of Narra garnered 1st place in the Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan (MMK) regional contest conducted by the Department of Agriculture for MIMAROPA region.
The Department of Agriculture, along with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) launched the search for the cleanest coastal community on November 17, 2016 at the BFAR regional office in Pampanga with the mission to recognize the outstanding initiatives of the local municipalities in attaining a comprehensive sustainable fisheries development.
BFAR initiated the competition in line with its aim to encourage local government units to embrace best practices and raise preservation, management, and sustainable development of the municipal waters.
The DA and BFAR said this measure will help boost the country’s food production as well as to strengthen various conservation programs of every local government.
The municipality of Narra bested other muncipalities within the MIMAROPA region in the competition’s guidelines which included management interventions to address illegal fishing, local participation and LGU support, social and economic benefits, enforcement and compliance and increased livelihood.
Narra Mayor Lucena Demaala said their entry for the Marine Protected Areas (MPA) category was hailed the winner among other MPA’s in the MIMAROPA region.
“Patuloy yung cleanliness at protection ng ating marine portected areas. Taon-taon patuloy ang pagtatanim ng mangrove, yung coordinated efforts ng ateng DA, fisherfolks, at NFARMC patuloy,” Demaala said.
She also said that Narra will represent the MIMAROPA region in the nationwide search for MMK awardees.
