The 16- year old minor nabbed by authorities in an operation Thursday may escape going to jail because of his age, the City Social Welfare Office said.

The suspect who is a student was arrested inside a courier company after claiming a package containing alleged illegal drugs in a joint operation  conducted by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Palawan and the Puerto Princesa City Anti-illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Force.

The operation was conducted after PDEA received information that a package will arrive at a courier company shipped from Dasmariñas City, Cavite to the suspect.

The package contained 75 grams of white crystalline substance hidden inside assorted goods amounting P700,000.

The PDEA said they will file charges against the suspect.

But Assistant Social Welfare Officer, Lydia Del Rosario said that the suspect can be charged in court but will be exempted from serving his sentence in jail under the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006.

Del Rosario said the minor will instead be put in a rehabilitation center for two years.

He will be assessed by a social worker if there will be a change in his personality and attitude, she said adding that “if he will not change he will be transferred to a regular jail.”

“Spend more time with your kids and children so that they will not be influenced by negative environment and friends,” Del Rosario advised parents.

“Be vigilant sa mga activities ng inyong mga anak. Lagi ding tanungin ang mga anak kung may problema and give more quality time with your kids dahil baka malaman mo na lang nasangkot na sa krimen ang iyong anak” Del Rosario added.
