Loving local arts, empowering local artists

GUHIT Pinas Palawan, in partnership with SM City Puerto Princesa, has played a role in gracing the annual Tandikan Festival through different activities at the mall including their art exhibit of various Tandikan (Palawan Peacock) paintings and other local landscapes and an on-the-spot portrait painting and sketching activity.

Puerto Princesa City has no shortage of talents, but for some time now, our creative artists have yet to be put in the spotlight. But recently different groups of local artists have been organizing themselves to form a fellowship of creative minds that aims to make the local culture and arts scene both progressive and lucrative.

From acclaimed film directors, fashion designers, internationally published writers, lauded poets and musicians, and members of progressive visual art collectives, talented Puerto Princesans and Palaweños are so eager to pave the way for a new breed of artists who will continue the City’s and Palawan’s cultural legacy. One of these groups is the Palawan Chapter of GUHIT Pinas, a nationwide art group that counts many Puerto Princesans, among other Palaweños, as part of its growing list of talented members.

The Guild for Upholding and Harnessing Indispensable Talents (GUHIT) Pinas is envisioning the country as Asia’s art capital, and the Palawan Chapter believes that realizing this vision will cause a tremendous leap in the value of Pinoy Art, more opportunities for local artists, and better educational programs for art enthusiasts.

GUHIT Pinas Palawan is still in its infancy. However, it has already initiated various activities that promote local artists and their works. This September, GUHIT Pinas Palawan, in partnership with SM City Puerto Princesa, has played a role in gracing the annual Tandikan Festival through different activities at the mall, including an art exhibit and on-the-spot portrait painting and sketching activities.. Displays of various Tandikan (Palawan Peacock) paintings and other local landscapes can be seen at the 2nd Level of the mall.

At present, the local artists group has 2,181 members and is still growing. Since it is a Facebook-based group and anyone can join as long as s/he lives here in Palawan, it’s quite possible that that number will grow in the future.

Almost every month, the group has meet-ups for art talk, art workshops, on-the-spot painting or sketching, reference collaboration, and for inspiring new members to explore their talents. As a group, they may consider their best achievement being able to inspire new members to explore beyond what they think are the limits of their capabilities. For the individual artists, it is meeting new people and learning new things that count as achievements of their own.

Anyone who is interested in arts is welcome to the group. GUHIT Pinas Palawan wants to inspire new artists, teach them new techniques and ways to deal with and understand different popular  preferences.  Everyone with a passion for the arts and dedication to learning is welcome to join.

For more information, you may visit their official Facebook page, GUHIT Pinas Palawan and also see samples of their works and the activities they do, or request to join as a new member through their private group.
