The Malacañang Palace through Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella announced today, May 8, the appointment of former Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Roy Cimatu as the new secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Cimatu’s appointment follows last week’s rejection of the ‘ad interim appointment of then DENR chief Regina Paz Lopez by the Commission on Appointment.

“We are confident that Secretary Cimatu shall faithfully serve the interest of the country and the Filipino people in his capacity as the new DENR Secretary,” Abella said in a statement.

Meanwhile, PNNI’s Atty. Robert Chan, who was vocal of ‘endorsing’ former Mayor Edward Hagedorn as replacement to Lopez, refuse to specify his reaction to Cimatu’s appointment.

He, however, expressed his expectations on Cimatu’s environmental leadership.

We want to see more of enforcement on forestry and fishery sector, apart from mining,” Chan said.

Cimatu was earlier appointed by Duterte as special envoy for Overseas Filipino Workers refugees and special envoy to the Middle East.

Cimatu is a member of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 1970 and served as AFP chief of staff from May to September 2002.
