“And when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself in a book a copy of this law, approved by the Levitical priests. And it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the LORD his God by keeping all the words of this law and these statutes, and doing them, that his heart may not be lifted up above his brothers, and that he may not turn aside from the commandment, either to the right hand or to the left, so that he may continue long in his kingdom, he and his children, in Israel.” Deuteronomy 17:18-20
Now that it’s already two days past the elections, votes had been casted, and presumably we already know the winners, let us look at the situation in the light of the Word of God.
We do not have a shortage of leaders. In fact, so many people ran for leadership positions all throughout the country. But, we have a shortage of good leaders.
Leaders have a very great responsibility. The more people under their care, the bigger the territory, the greater the problems, then the more that leaders should call upon and depend on the Lord. Even if a person has the highest rank in the land, he still has to acknowledge the authority over him: God.
The Word—the Holy Bible—is the most important tool in the hands of a leader for him to be able to lead his people. It’s not just the mere knowledge of the content of the Scriptures, but obedience to them and a heart inclined to loving the Lord. Real love for God leads to obedience. If a leader truly and passionately loves God, he will surely have love for the Word of God where he can glen wisdom, guidance, and direction that he needs for his leadership.
And while I do pray that the leaders of the nation would learn to prioritize seeking God and His Word, I pray this for myself as well. Self-leadership is of dire importance in a country such as ours. We really need to seek God ourselves so that change would happen in us. Change, then, would cascade to our different spheres of influence and ripple to the rest of the nation.
