Senior transport officials visited Coron Thursday on the eve of Friday’s scheduled transport summit in Puerto Princesa City.
The party was led by Department of Transportation (DoTr) Undersecretary Thomas Orbos, and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Chairman Martin Delgra III.
Governor Alvarez assisted the DOTr officials in their travel to Coron by lending them his personal aircraft.
The ocular visit was organized by Representative Franz “Chicoy” Alvarez (Palawan, 1st District) and Governor Jose Alvarez.
Coron was the first target of the national government’s crackdown against colorum vehicles. Local officials have decried its impact on the town’s main industry of tourism.
Rep. Alvarez told Palawan News that the crackdown’s effect in the tourism industry is now getting serious as many shuttle van operators have stopped servicing tourists due to fear of having their vehicles impounded.
“Tinututukan talaga natin ang problemang ito kasi malaki na ang epekto nito sa northern Palawan,” Rep. Alvarez said.
Alvarez together with various transport group leaders in Coron went to LTFRB last week to find ways to ease the situation of the transport sector in Coron.
“Maganda po na makita nila ang totoong sitwasyon sa Coron para maintindihan nila na malaking epekto nito sa turismo,” said Jonathan de leon, one of the shuttle van operators in Coron.
