The Provincial Board of Palawan is pushing for the creation of an inter-agency committee that will look after the overall health concerns of the indigenous people particularly those who are confined in hospitals.

Board Member Eduardo Modesto Rodriguez, chair of the health committee said that there is a need to have this kind of group that will focus not only on hospitalization concerns but on the health condition of the indigenous people.

According to Rodriguez many indigenous people are afraid to undergo check-up or seek hospital confinement due to lack of money to pay for the medicines and services of doctors. With this this committee, these concerns will be immediately addressed.

He added that Palawan is second in the MIMAROPA Region in malnutrition rate and according to the record of the Provincial Nutrition Office, the areas with high prevalence of malnutrition are the indigenous cultural communities.

The inter-agency committee will be composed of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) as chair, and the members are the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), Department of Health (DOH), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and the Department Of Education (DepeD).

The proposal of Rodriguez is now with the Committee on Appropriation and Committee on Health for further study.
