Palawan Governor Jose Chavez Alvarez wants to speed up the rehabilitation of damaged structures and to build a strong storm shelter in Mangsee Island, Balabac.
Alvarez raised the plan during the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) meeting on Friday.
“Para minimize ang patay kung maari wala tayong patay. I hope hindi na mangyari ito kahit ‘yong iba ay hindi taga Palawan (namatay) but still tao ‘yan,” Alvarez said.
The PDRRMC monitoring report showed that Vinta damaged some 1,136 houses were damaged by severe tropical storm Vinta in Mangsee alone, on top of over 37 reported deaths and 60 missing.
Alvarez also urged the body to actively seek the families of those who have died.
“Kailangan malaman ng pamilya, hanapin niyo , ‘wag na natin hintayin na ang pamilya ang pumunta dito,” he said.
He also called on the Sangguniang Panlalawigan to pass a resolution to immediately fix the damaged structures including schools on the island.
“Yong sangguniang panlalawigan ay magpasa ng resolusyon to immediately fix lalong lalo na ‘yong mga structure na ginagamit ng mga bata kasi disaster ito,” he said.
“Let’s make this a history to guide us towards the future,” Alvarez said.
