A still unnamed 12-year old girl from Balabac is missing after reportedly being attacked by a crocodile in Sitio Tukanigalo, Barangay Catagupan on November 9.
According to the local authorities, the crocodile attacked the victim while she was walking atop a bamboo footbridge to cross the river to join her two younger sisters who had already reached the riverbank.
Cruzalde Ablaῆa, Provincial DRRMO Program Manager, said they are still conducting a search and rescue operation hoping to save the victim.
“Hanggang ngayon hinahanap pa itong bata pero ang huling report sa akin ngayon walang naging magandang resulta kasi hindi pa nakikita,” he said.
Last October 31, to a 45-year-old woman, identified as Maritsaya Hussin was also attacked by a crocodile at Barangay Pasig.
Ablaῆa expressed concern that the area may no longer be safe for local residents because the crocodiles have been disturbed from their known mangrove habitat.
“Natural habitat nila ‘yon kaya dapat ‘yong mga residente na lang ang lumayo doon sa area at baka kasi kaya nagkakaganoon sila dahil nabubulabog na sila ng mga tao doon,” he said.
Recently, residents of Balabac town have expressed concern over the frequent sightings of crocodiles near Rabor Elementary School.
