Marking the third time since her assumption as DENR Chief, Secretary Regina Paz Lopez is in Palawan again for a two-day visit from January 6 to 7.

Lopez, who was accompanied by former Undersecretary now Consultant Leo Jasareno and Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) MIMAROPA Regional Director Roland de Jesus, arrived in Puerto Princesa early morning today and proceeded to the former mining site of Palawan Quicksilver Mine, Inc. (PQMI) in Bgy. Sta. Lourdes.

PQMI is the only abandoned mine in MIMAROPA under the old Mining Law which was identified by the DENR-MGB for rehabilitation. The DENR is currently implementing a rehabilitation project in the said area. In a previous interview with Palawan News, MGB Dir. De Jesus said the Department remains optimistic that in 2017, the former mine’s rehabilitation will be complete and the area turned into a tourist destination.

Lopez also paid a visit to a Batak community in Bgy. Concepcion.

As of this writing, Lopez is in the municipality of San Vicente for several environment-related visits.

On January 7, the Secretary is set to visit the areas of two suspended mining companies in Palawan, namely Citinickel Mines and Development Corporation in San Isidro, Narra, and Berong Nickel Corporation in Berong, Quezon.

Lopez previously visited Palawan on July 22 to conduct a dialogue with environment stakeholders, and on December 7 to conduct an inspection at Rio Tuba mine.
