Colonel Charlton Sean Gaerlan on Wednesday assumed command of the 3rd Marine Brigade (3MBde) based in Palawan, replacing Brig. General Nathaniel Casem, who has been assigned to his new post as Naval General Inspector of the Philippine Navy (PN).
Speaking with reporters following a turnover ceremony at the Marines headquarters in Barangay Tiniguiban, Gaerlan said he will ensure the implementation of the Western Command’s peace and order plan for the province.
“Dito sa Palawan the concern is more about the NPA. We always want the peace process sa ating mga kababayan who are trying to fight the government using arms. We want to invite them to surrender because everything could be done naman under a peaceful process,” he said.
“WESCOM has its plan, so all we have to do is pursue that – do what we are supposed to do by continuing the function of the Marines here,” he added.
Casem said he had advised the new commander of the 3rd MBde to enhance Palawan’s security posture by conducting more patrols with Marine Battalion Landing Team 4 and Marine Battalion Landing Team 12 and by strengthening partnerships with the barangays and the local government units (LGUs).
“Hindi lang maintain kundi dapat ma-enhance pa ang ating security by sea and land patrols, at lalo na ang collaboration natin sa mga key leaders sa mga bayan,” he said.
Casem served as brigade commander for almost one year and 10 months.
The change of command ceremony was presided by Philippine Marine Corps (PMC) commandant, Major General Alvin Parreño.
