Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin maintains his reservation on the scheduled voyage of youth group Kalayaan Atin Ito Movement to Kalayaan Island in the West Philippine Sea due to sea condition.
Gazmin, during his visit to Puerto Princesa City, Monday, said that the security and safety of more than a hundred students who will stay in Kalayaan Island for almost one month is of utmost importance to them and that the military might not give clearance for their voyage.
“Inaalala natin ng kanilang safety, kaya hindi natin sila binibigyan ng total approval,” Gazmin said.
He added that the island is not equip with the basic facilities in case any problem will crop up. The voyage would be difficult at this time of the year due to northeast monsoon or amihan.
“To stop them, is a violation of their right pero we must give all the necessary warnings and precautions to them,” he said.
Members of the Kalayaan Atin Ito Movement are billeted at Palawan State University main campus in Puerto Princesa City while waiting for the clearance of the government. They arrived in the city few days ago.
