Coast Guard authorities in Cuyo held on Monday five large-scale commercial fishing vessels reportedly conducting illegal fishing near Barangay Cocoro in Magsaysay town.
The fishing fleet, manned by an estimated 50 crewmen, were seized for using “superlight”, a form of commercial fishing which is banned within the 15-kilometer municipal waters under Republic Act 8550 or the Fisheries Code.
A Mandatory Pollution Inspection (MARPOL) inspection conducted by Coast Guard Marine and Environmental Protection Unit (MEPU-Cuyo) showed that the five vessels also did not have a Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan which is a violation of Headquarters Philippine Coast Guard (HPCG) Memorandum Circular (MC) 09-14 Sec VI and VII dated 19 December 2014.
