Flooding in the streets of El Nido caused by the heavy rains during the last few days has underscored anew the tourist town’s continuing problem with the absence of a sewage and drainage system.
Residents and concerned citizens vented their frustrations on social media, sharing photos of ankle and knee deep floods around the center of El Nido town.
“El Nido anong nangyayari sayo? Sa tinagal-tagal ko dito ngayon lang bumaha ng ganito. Ulan pa more,” a netizen posted on his Facebook account.
Mayor Nieves Rosento acknowledged that the problem is not new to them and that they have been trying to minimize the flooding by de-clogging their waterways.
“Sanay na kami dyan. Last week lang nagka-problema din kaya nga nag-declogging kami,” she said.
Rosento had instructed the municipal disaster risk reduction office to conduct preventive measures to avert possible landslides in vulnerable areas of the town including Corong-corong.
“Kaya nga talagang napapanahon na isulong ang paglalagay ng drainage system para hindi paulit-ulit ang ganitong problema,” Rosento said.
Rosento added they are set for the signing of the contract to start their drainage project.
