With the second largest number of “surrenderees” in the province under the Duterte administration’s war on drugs, the town of Coron held a “drugs summit” over the weekend to step up its own anti-drug campaign.

Jonathan Dabuit, administrator of Coron, said the summit meeting held September 22 was aligned with their municipality’s goal to get rid of illegal drugs and bring back those who have been affected by addiction to the mainstream of the society.

“Coron is No. 2 in the entire Palawan with the most number of surrenderees. After the summit, Mayor Jericho Barracoso immediately met with all barangay chairmen and other local offices on how to help delist some residents and help them go back to mainstream of society,” Dabuit said.

In a span of eight months, Dabuit said 102 residents have been arrested and detained at their municipal jail due to hard drugs addiction and peddling. He said most of them were part of about 500 who surrendered voluntarily earlier under Oplan Tokhang.

“Sixteen barangay councilors are on the list of the police, and two had already been arrested,” he said.

Dabuit added that Barracoso had also met with the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) representative in Palawan, the Municipal Health Office (MHO) and the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) to begin the process of dealing with the remaining surrenderees and how they and their families can be helped.

“What was discussed was that the barangays and the municipal government will allocate funds for a drug rehabilitation program for them,” he said.

The barangays will be clustered, and those from areas in the center of the town are going to be assisted in their rehab first.

The MHO will provide the guidelines involving the process of the rehabilitation that Mayor Barracoso reportedly ordered immediately.
