Two barangays from Palawan have qualified in the national search for the Cleanest and Greenest LGU-Model Barangay for Ecological Solid Waste Management (ESWM), the local office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) said.
The nationwide search is initiated by the EMB-Solid Waste Management Division.
Environmental Liason personnel, Nicaith Trisha Enrile of the Provincial Environmental Management Office (PEMO) of the DENR-EMB, told Palawan News that Barangays Ipilan in the municipality of Brooke’s Point and Tinagong Dagat in Narra were the only barangays in the province to pass the initial validation the environmental management board conducted.
“They passed the initial validation and we are hoping na papasa po sila sa national validation na gagawin” Enrile said.
Though there are four categories of the said search, depending on the classification of the cities and municipalities where the nominated barangay is located, the champion for each four categories will receive the grand prize of P1 million, P750,000 for second place, P500,000 for best segregation at source, and P500,000 for best materials recovery facility.
Five consolation prize winners will also receive P500,000 each, and regional consolation prize winners will also get P20,000 each.
The awarding will be done in June 2018, during the Environment Month Celebration, said Enrile.
She explained that the barangays were judged according to their segregation at source or presence of segregation bins, operational materials recovery facilities (MRF) for recyclable resources, and active Barangay Ecological Solid Waste Management Committee.
Each city and municipalities, regardless of classification, were invited by the DENR-EMB to nominate one barangay as their entry for the national search.
Senior Environmental Management Specialist (SEMS) Zosima Jampit confirmed that these barangays have indeed bested all other barangays in the province in terms of best practices and their initiative in the implementation of the Republic Act 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act.
“Magandang example itong pinakita ng dalawang barangay na ito sa implementation ng solid waste management program, kaya sila yung pambato ng Palawan para sa national search,” she said.
