“An apple a day drives the doctor away”, says the old sage. But when buying is unaffordable the doctor is kept at bay. Someone obstinately refused to see a doctor who consequently ended up confined at the hospital with severe gangrene infection on his right toe resulting to amputation. “ Better safe than sorry”, so they say.
Generally, we know that pills don’t usually taste pleasant or sweet but bitter, the reason why we don’t chew but swallow them with liquid. When the doctor prescribes medicine, we must take it despite its repellent taste for better health condition. Sometimes the more acrid a drug is, the better its effect and faster is the healing process.
In the spiritual and moral order, life’s trials are medications too prescribed by our wise Physician. He proportions the dosage according to our need. We must trust His competence to heal our spiritual and moral disorder.
Setbacks are life’s bitter but effective ways to cure one’s pride. Losing business is another distasteful medicine which the Lord allows to remind us to curve our materialistic and greedy tendencies. Debilitating illness can be another form of God’s prescribed bitter medicine to restrain vices like smoking, excessive drinking and gambling among others. During my smoking times, consuming two to three packs a day, a friend gave me a note that says; “ Cancer is the best cure for smoking”. I got what it means and I immediately stopped. I haven’t tried a single stick for almost thirty year now. Thanks be to God.
We encounter personal trials and tribulations that wane us down internally and externally, and it takes a lot of courage to muster enough strength to face them. Faith and trust in God enable us to overcome our human passion and predicament to see His hand working in our favor despite the insurmountable odds. Theodore Cuyler, an American priest said; “ The real victory of faith is too trust God in the dark and through the dark.” And St. Paul to the Hebrews said; “ My son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord or loose heart when reproved by Him for whom the Lord loves. He disciplines.” But one thing is very sure: God takes care of His children and though the medicine he sometimes prescribes is bitter, but it will make us better.
On the flip side, someone said that happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to Turn On The Light. Don’t you like the chapter of life you are in? Write a new one for you’re the author of your life. Better more than popular, be an example. Never complain about what your parents couldn’t give you. It was probably all they had. It costs $0.00 to be grateful for what you have. Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, “ I will try again tomorrow”. Faith means that you have peace even when you don’t have all the answers. I heard someone say that there’s no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs. One touch of God’s favor can shift you into something greater. Happiness is enjoying little things in life. Amen on that folks!!
St. Faustina wrote Jesus words;” At the hour of death, I do not reward for good results but for the patience and hardships undergone for My sake”. ( Diary 86).
